Trivia Quiz #12

This month's theme: Legion tryouts and rejects. As usual, you guys will probably have all the answers by tomorrow.

1. Via the magic of retcons, who was the first Legion applicant to be rejected?

2. Which Legion rejects eventually became full-fledged members? (With a little help, I was able to come up with 22 names!)

3. Who was the first rejected Legion applicant who would later go on to be a member of the Legion of Substitute Heroes?

4. Which Legion tryout rejects turned into villains?

5. Back in the Adventure days, who was the very first applicant that we saw at the very first open Legion tryout?

6. Who was the first applicant known to have been rejected for using a device as the source of his/her/its powers?

7. Who was Fortress Lad, and what happened to him?

8. Between his first and second appearances, what major physiological change did Double-Header undergo?

Most of the Legion-reject questions are a little Silver Age for my taste, but I'll do my best.

1. I'm gonna say Anti-Lad.
2. 22 members! Okay, let's see... from that Supergirl issue, there were about three of them: let's say Bouncing Boy, Sun Boy and Shrinking Violet. Most of the Subs were rejects who eventually got in: Polar Boy, Fire Lad, Stone Boy, Chlorophyll Kid, Color Kid, Porcupine Pete, Infectious Lass. Assuming we're talking about the same characters here, Storm Boy and Calamity King were the same. Spider Girl. Wildfire. Supergirl herself. Are we counting Superboy, because at first they told him he was rejected? I'm guessing not. What have I got so far, fifteen? Oh: Crystal Kid and Nightwind, that takes us to seventeen. Not Dream Girl; she was accepted but left of her own accord. Atmos, of course; that's eighteen. Was Dawnstar rejected or did she just go straight to the Academy by herself? Or Timber Wolf? I'm not counting them, anyway. Was Andromeda initially rejected like Supergirl was? I'd think she must have been, so I'll say she gives us nineteen. I think that's the best I can do.
3. I'll guess Polar Boy.
4. Spider Girl. Ron-Karr. Radiation Roy. Jungle King. Dynamo Guy or whatever he thought his name was. That rich guy, can't call his name to mind, who recruited Hitler, Nero and Dillinger. I'm sure there're more.
5. Mmm... Antennae Lad?
6. Was that Storm Boy?
8. I think... his heads were separated from each other and put on separate necks?

Verification word: morax, the sequel to a Dr. Seuss book.

2. Rather than name all the ones Matthew did, I'll just add Calamity King to the list (another 5YG member).

4. Again, just adding to the list: Esper Lass, Micro Lad, and Magno Lad. Mentalla *seemed* to be a villain, but as I recall she turned out to be working undercover, so maybe she doesn't count.

7. Fortress Lad became the original Legion Clubhouse in the Secret Origins story that actually saw print.

4. Also! Ze Tongue and the other ones from that story he was in!

(Alan: I actually did have Calamity King in there.)

4. Just thought of another: Cera Kesh, the new Emerald Empress.

1. Arm-Fall Off Boy

3. I take this question to imply that the Subs were already around at the time of his rejection. So, I'll guess Color Kid, since he was the first new Sub.

5. Brainiac 5 in Action 276?

6. I'm pretty sure that it was Storm Boy.

John - for #3, I'm looking for the first person who was a Legion reject that later went on to join the Subs. The question doesn't specify whether the Subs were around or not at the time of the tryout.

Alan - for #4, I guess I was thinking more of the tryout rejects. I don't count Esper Lass, Micro Lad, and Magno Lad as rejects (even though their story was called "the Legion of Super-Rejects"). They basically walked up to the HQ and demanded to be on the team because they were stronger than people who were already on the team. They never tried out.

John - for #5, what I meant to ask for is the open tryouts that took place after ADV 300, not the introduction of the "classic" Legionnaires in the early early days.

In that case, you are looking for Anteanna Boy, or however it's spelled. "He's Three-eyed Sam, from the planet WHAM!"

Hints:

1. We've got two answers for this one, are either of them right?

2. Apparently I miscounted, I only had 19 on my list. I didn't count Andromeda, but you did miss one, Matthew. Go back and look at your list and how you grouped them, one missing name should pop out.

3. Duke got it, Antennae Boy appeared one issue before the Subs did. It took him a while to join, though.

4. You guys got all the ones I was thinking of, though there are probably more.

5. Nobody got this one yet.

6. It's not Storm Boy.

7. You got this one, it was easy.

8. Another easy one that you got.

Whoa, too hard for me.

I missed one? Unless Visi-Lad applied one time and I missed it, I can't figure out who it could have been.

Was Antennae Lad ever a member of the Subs? I didn't think he was. From that issue of DC Comics Presents, I thought he was in the Legion Reserve.

Yeah, I just saw it upon reading that list for the tenth time. Sorry about that.

Actually, they were all applicants who'd been rejected by the "no power duplication" rule. Check Superboy 212, Page 4, panel 2: Cosmic Boy says, "I recognize the others, too! They're all Legion rejects!" The first two panels of page 2 show Magno Lad going into, and then leaving, LSH HQ; the captions say he's a "hopeful applicant" and then "he emerges from the mighty complex, moments later...rejected."

Is the answer to #1 Bouncing Boy?

Thinking about your hint about #2, Matthew didn't include Night Girl, but I don't think she ever officially joined the Legion, not even after the 5YG. Of course, I could just be misreading your hint.

Now you've got me trying to remember the first post-300 open tryout and I just can't. I keep jumping to "One of us is a traitor!" but there must have been some before then!

And you're sure it wasn't Storm Boy? ;-)

On the hint for #2.... I haven't read the story of Supergirl's first tryout in a long time, but for some reason I'm thinking Chameleon Boy was also trying out at that time.

1. It would either be Arm-Fall-Off Boy, Fortress Lad, or Mnemonic Kid, all from the same story. I'm betting on Mnemonic Kid.

3. Antenna Lad wasn't in the Subs, he was in the Subs Auxiliary. Don't recall if he ever "graduated".

1. I thought it was Bouncing Boy too, but I may be thinking of a different retcon.

5. I want to say Ron-Karr or that rich guy who wanted to buy his way onto the team.

6. Dynamo Boy? The reporter who wanted a story about being a Legionnaire for a week, and had devices that made him look like he had Lightning Lad's powers.

Alternately, it may have been Priapism Lad in the Earth-52(b) Legion. Just don't ask what device.
