San Diego Con '07: day 4 (update #1)

Update #1: added IGN coverage

There's no Legion-related programming going on today in San Diego, but I hope whoever's there catches the Pro/Fan Trivia contest.

So since there's nothing to update for today, I'll update stuff from earlier in the con that

  • THE BEAT informs us that DC has mp3 podcasts of their panels and photos from the panels there. Here's the pages for Thursday (Group Therapy), Friday (DC Nation), and Saturday (New Worlds Order).

  • IGN has coverage of Thursday's Countdown panel, Friday's DC Nation and animated Legion/Batman panels, and Saturday's New Worlds Order panel.

One new item from IGN's coverage of DC Nation panel: "There are really three Legion of Superheroes. Batman will meet this third version."

I was there, on the panel, and we won 230-130 (I think). There was a Legion question which everyone, including Paul Levitz, missed, but groaned and smacked the table when they heard the answer.

The theme of the contest was, btw, the Multiverse.

Question: Which Earth-1 character travelled to a parallel universe to join that Earth's LSH?

Ooh, I'm not sure even I would have gotten that one. And Levitz wrote that story! Who was the fourth person on the Pro team? (I assume it was Waid, Wein, Levitz, and someone else - Busiek? Johns?)

Congrats to the Black Ink Irregulars for their win. I was on the team one year, when we narrowly lost out to the Purple Pros. I'm sure tyg will give a blow-by-blow account of the contest soon.

Yay! I was the one who submitted that question! Whoo hoo!

And now I want many many more details. Because that wasn't the only question I submitted.

Waid didn't make it, so Len had to scramble to get a team. The final line-up for the Pros was Len Wein, Paul Levitz, Kurt Busiek and Elliot S! Maggin. Considering that Maggin is my absolute favourite Superman writer of all time, Tom was half-jokingly saying he'd take me off the team in case I was too freaked out to go up against Maggin.

I did manage to get a couple of answers in, which made me happy.

On a different subject, hasn't Batman already met three Legions? Is it possible that the third Legion won't be the postboot one?

I guess DC just wants to make things more confusing for us...

Well, metachronologically, the threeboot Legion may count as the third version. And Batman's meeting them now in Brave and Bold. So maybe that's what they're talking about.

As I wrote here earlier, Batman has already met four different Legions: pre-Crisis, post-Zero Hour, post-Infinite Crisis, and Lightning Saga.

One of the panels said something about Batman finally realizing this - after all, he is the World's Greatest Detective (but who happens to be suffering from multiversal retconitis).

So who was the 4th on the Black Ink Irregulars this year? And I note that Paul Levitz continues the long tradition of the Pros missing questions based on material that they wrote...

The Irregulars narrowed the Pros' lead to 6-5 overall since the series started in 1995. For more on past matches, Lee K. Seitz maintains the archives.

The Black Inks were Tom Galloway, Hal Shipman, David Oakes and myself.
