L3W status

From this week's "20 Answers and 1 Question" at Newsarama with Dan DiDio:

17. What’s the status of Legion of 3 Worlds?

DD: We decided that, even though it’s connected to Final Crisis, the story’s events take place in the future, and therefore it didn’t have to run lock-step in conjunction with the main series. Legion of 3 Worlds is essential to the DC Universe and tied to Final Crisis, but because stories take place in a future timeline, it doesn’t need to come out in the same way that Revelations did.

This is the latest in a long string of bad news about the Legion. The company clearly doesn't want my money or support...

What do you think is more likely, that DiDio sits around and thinks, "how can we LOSE even more Legion fans? I know! We'll delay L3W!" or do you think it might be that Perez is just taking his time on unbelievably jam-packed pages of art?

I'd much rather have a super-delayed L3W totally drawn by Perez than have someone else come in and fill-in on the series, wouldn't you?

I had originally thought that it wasn't the artwork on L3W that was the delay, I figured it was being held back so that it would come out at the proper time in coordination with the main series.

This is turning into a "War of the Gods" shipping fiasco.

I'd rather have a Perez drawn comic if he'd just stop doing his audition for new artist on Where's Waldo? with each and every freaking panel. Yes, George, we know you can draw eight hundred people per panel in a nine panel a page grid. Now learn a new trick...

actually, it looks like #3 has moved a week back... it HAD been scheduled for feb 11th, but now it's scheduled for the 4th.

I thought I had heard that it wasn't Perez that was holding things up and that instead, it was Johns who was behind on the scripts. I can't remember where I heard that, though.

Either way, I'm fine to wait. I'd really rather have a regular ongoing Legion comic coming out.

I met Perez at a con in Dallas a few years ago, and he said something to the effect that between arthritis and a then-recent hand injury his speed was much reduced from what it used to be.

But since they're not attributing it to that, it's probably Johns. Don't want to piss off the Golden Boy, do we?

ok, all of you guys complaining about the wait:

try drawing a comic with hundreds of characters EACH WITH A DIFFERENT COSTUME, EACH IN A DIFFERENT STYLE. Now draw the villains in there too, they're all different with different powers. see how fast you put it out. now do it again. and again. and again. until you've done five issues.

no, actually just try drawing ONE comic with THREE characters in a futuristic setting with fully rendered backgrounds. see how fast you are. go ahead. i've got my stop watch.

just drawing ONE comic that ISN'T legion is HARD and takes A MONTH. a MONTH. let's compare it to something similar like, i don't know, FINAL CRISIS? notice how many artists are working on that book to get it out?

i'm VERY grateful they found someone to take on this monumental, astonishingly impossible task. i feel SO bad for george perez. he can take all the time he needs as far as i'm concerned.

Of course he can. And Mr. Johns can take as long as he wants to write it, too. But... why not wait until more of the issues are in the can before soliciting them, so that there isn't a wait of months between issues? Because long delays like this only hurt sales.

I don't care whose fault it is. Sure, I'd rather have the issues on time, but then again, once FC:L3W is over, it could be a long time before we see another for-real Legion comic. So I'm okay with making it last.
