Trivia Quiz #41

Another quiz with no particular theme.

1. Connect the Legion to the Star Wars movie "The Empire Strikes Back" in three steps. (No trickery, metaphors, or stretches of the imagination allowed.)

2. Who was the first Legionnaire to have a single-word code name (no hyphens)?

3. Who from the 20th/21st centuries has ever joined the Legion, become an honorary member, or become a Reservist?

4. Where was the first "real" Legion logo used? (That is, one that was reused, as opposed to a one-off.)

5. Which Legionnaires or close associates have the same (or nearly so) name as a Marvel character?

6. According to Khundish law, a married woman becomes the wife of the man who kills her husband. Which Legionnaires were caught up in this situation, and why did the male not become the female's husband?

7. Years before being flash-fried by Nemesis Kid, how did Karate Kid die the first time?

1. I've written about this elsewhere so I'll let someone else have a shot.

2. Either Superboy or Supergirl (depending on which one you believe joined first) or if you weren't counting either one for some reason, Reflecto. Or Wildfire.

4. Adventure #300, I think?

7. Poisoned by Rakurga in Adventure #378? That may not have been what you actually had in mind, but either way I'd like to state for the record that I didn't have to look up the name Rakurga.

Anon - for #4, I'm looking for the logo for "Legion of Super-Heroes" that appears on the cover or inside, not the "L" on the flag. And for #5, there are no Legion characters or groups named "Guardians of the Galaxy" or "Shi'ar Imperial Guard". I'm looking for a character's name, like Superboy or Mon-El.

5. Spider-Girl, not sure if Power Boy was ever shown to have adopted Power Man or not, Chameleon, The Hunter (both Orion and Kraven have occasionally not used their family name in their title), Leviathan, Jewel, Echo, Andromeda, Inferno, Gear, Omega.

Without looking at anyone's answers...

1. Connect the Legion to the Star Wars movie "The Empire Strikes Back" in three steps. (No trickery, metaphors, or stretches of the imagination allowed.)

2. Superboy, of course, or Supergirl if you count her as being first. If you don't like those answers, then I think it's Wildfire.

3. Superboy, Supergirl, Mon-El, Jimmy Olsen, Lana Lang, Pete Ross, Ferro, Superboy II (Kon-El), Lori Morning, Dev-Em, Martian Manhunter (as R.J. Brande), Amethyst (as White Witch), Bart Allen (some of these may not count, but I read your question as being as inclusive as possible. Anyway, I'm sure I missed a couple).

5. I know there's a lot of them. I can think of Wildfire, Spider Girl, Neon (?), Andromeda (?)...

6. Veilmist was trying to snag Ultra Boy as her husband. Devlin O'Ryan accidentally killed Firefist, and so became her prospective husband, and she tried to get Jo to kill Devlin, which he wasn't going for, but the whole thing became academic when the Khunds recalled Veilmist and Flederweb (and later resurrected Firefist).

1. The Legion fought Tyr, whose homeworld was a mobile war planet with devastating weapons.

The Death Star, a mobile war planet with devastating weapons, destroyed the planet Alderaan in Star Wars IV: A New Hope.

Princess Leia, who played a major part in The Empire Strikes Back, lived on the planet Alderaan.

#2. Supergirl and Superboy, yeah, but they're too easy.

I seem to recall that in one or more real early adventures, Sun Boy and Star Boy were referred to as Sunboy and Starboy. Anyone?

Meerkatdon said...

#7 Yeah, poisoning just before a bunch of Legionnaires went off to Seeris, and he was cured by the Miracle Machine -- but was that really death, or just the ever-popular "death-like coma"? (Or, if I recall the story correctly, frozen in time a moment before death by the head Seeron.)

You wouldn't be thinking of "the little death" on Val's honeymoon night with Jeckie?

(Hey wait a minute, Nemesis Kid didn't flash-fry Val, Val did it to himself by jumping into a fusion powersphere, didn't he?)

#5 I'm pretty sure that Gim Allon's nickname in the Science Police was "The Incredible Hulk." Ask Gigi Cusimano if you don't believe me. :)

1. Didn't Darth Vader appear in the crowd scene in LSH #300, along with Garfield and Spider-Man?

7. Karate Kid wasn't a member when everybody died in that Mxyzptlk, was he?

1 -- The Legion and the Joker are both owned by DC Comics, Mark Hamill voiced the Joker in the Batman cartoon, Mark Hamill was Luke Skywalker in the Empire Strikes Back.

2 -- Superboy (or Supergirl if you subscribe to that theory)

3 -- Superboy (1 and 2), Supergirl (1 and 3), Mon-El/Valor (1,2,3), Ferro (2), Lana Lang, Pete Ross, Jimmy Olsen, Comet, Streaky, Krypto, Beppo (the Super-Pets were considered Reservists, right?)

4 - My guess is the one that appeared on the 4-issue Legion reprint series.

5 - Spider-Girl/Spider-Girl, Power Boy/Power Man, Thunder/Thundra, Andromeda/Andromeda .. I'm sure there's more, but I'm not currently reading anything from Marvel.

6 - Devlin O'Ryan accidentally killed Firefist, but didn't want to become Veilmists's husband. They ended up bringing Firefist back to life.

7 - He was poisoned to death and brought back by the Miracle Machine.
