Trivia Quiz #13

This month’s theme: Time Travel. Park your Time Cubes and Time Bubbles and gather ‘round the Time Beacon, it’s trivia time!

1. Supergirl was just elected Legion leader (in a shady vote). What happened the last time a Kryptonian was elected leader?

2. The "Lightning Saga" Legion recently came to the 21st century. Of course, that’s not the first time that Legionnaires visited the past. But by my count, only 7 of the "traditional" Legionnaires (no retcons, no villains, etc.) never visited the 20th century during the ADVENTURE era (where Timber Wolf and Chemical King were the last to join). Which ones?

3. Not everyone traveled back in time – some went forward. From what time periods did all members of the Legion of Super-Pets travel from?

4. The Legion has fought a number of villains with 20th century roots, but which villain(s) survived from the 20th/21st century to the 30th/31st to fight the Legion, rather than traveled through time?

5. Who implanted a post-hypnotic suggestion in Superboy's mind so that when he went back to the 20th century, he'd forget anything he'd learned about his future while he was in the 30th century?

6. Back in the days when new applicants had to perform a task, what was Ultra Boy tasked to do? There are two answers to this, pre-Crisis and Glorithverse.

7. Their encounter with Lori Morning was not the first time the Legion had had to deal with the H-Dial. When was the first?

8. In Adventure 247, when the Legion traveled back in time to recruit/tease Superboy, how did the powers of each of the three Legionnaires manifest themselves?

9 comments:

  1. 1. No idea. I can't remember when a Kryptonian was ever leader.

    2. Hrm. Again no real idea and I'm too lazy to try to work it out.

    3. Krypto was from the 50s. Streaky was from the mid-60s. I have to assume Beppo was too. I seem to remember that Comet was from the future, I think, though I don't see how he could have been from far in the future, since he was contemporary to Supergirl and Streaky.

    4. Darkseid, Brainiac (kinda), Ra's Al Ghul. Does the Infinite Man count?

    5. Saturn Girl, in particular so he wouldn't remember Supergirl or the deaths of his parents.

    6. Originally he had to find out Superboy's secret identity (like it wouldn't have been well known). Similarly, in the Glorith-verse, he had to find out what happened to Valor.

    7. They encountered an H-Dial in New Adventures of Superboy #50.

    8. Lightning Boy clapped his hands together (each hand was a different polarity) to create the lightning. Cosmic Boy had magnetic eyes. Saturn Girl's power was more to do with giving mental commands than reading minds.

  2. Hullo, Michael,

    Somewhat tough this time around.

    1. I've obviously forgotten my Legion lore, since I don't remember when a Kryptonian was ever Legion leader. (And we won't talk about the travesty of Supergirl being "elected" leader in the current election. They should have opened the voting to the comics fans, the way it was done in the old days.)

    2. I wasn't sure if this one included visits to the 20th Century made by the various LSHers in other comics of the time, so won't answer this one for now until you clarify. :)

    3. Hmm, let's see... As I recall, Krypto was from the 1950S, and I think that Streaky came from some time in the middle of the 1960s. I believe Beppo came from the late 1960s, but I could be wrong. Comet's the tough one, since I always thought that he came from the past in the time of ancient Grece, but he was brought to the Legion time period from some time in the 1970s, after a wizard allowed him to revert to human when a comet was nearby. And Proty II came from a world in Antares in the late 30th Century.

    4. Another tough one. Off the top of my head... Darkseid, Brainiac (sort of, in terms of Pulsar Stargrave), TRa's al Ghul (or however it's spelled), Mordru, the Infinite Man (if you want to be technical), and...I'm sure I've missed a couple of others.

    5. The post-hypnotic suggestion was implanted by Supergirl. It was later erroneously said that Saturn Girl had implanted it.

    6. Pre-Crisis, Ultra Boy had to uncover Superboy's secret identity. In the Glorithverse, he had to find out what had happened to Valor (formerly Mon-El).

    7. The first time the Legion encountered an H-dial was back in New Adventures of Superboy or some such #50.

    8. Lightning Lad had to clap his hands together. Comsic Boy's powers came from his eyes. Saturn Girl's power was more along the lines of giving mental commands, rather than telepathy and the like. (The costumes were very different, too.)

  3. Tough questions this time. I'll do my best to supplement what is up already.

    1. S/LSH 225? Superboy gets elected leader, but Wildfire takes command because Supes was only a part-time member. I think there was a prediction from their supercomputer that the leader would die in the next mission, so Kal decides to run for leader as he would be most likely to survive. Bad guys end up destroying Wildfire, but he was good as new once he had a new containment suit!

    2. I'll try to work this out from memory. During the Adventure era: Let's see: the three founders all came to the 20th in Adv. 247. Ultra Boy does it in Supeboy 98, I think. Star Boy in his first appearance. Shadow Lass, Mon-El, Triplicate Girl, and someone else do it against Mordru. Phantom Girl recruits Supergirl in the 20th. I figure Brainiac 5 and Chameleon Boy did, but the only stories that immediately come to mind where they do are post-Adventure. Same with Karate Kid and Princess Projectra. Invisible Kid probably led a team there during his time as leader. (I may just be thinking of one of the stories in Legion 300.) I'm having trouble coming up with any others so let's guess. Timber Wolf and Chemical King, just because they joined at the end of the Adventure Era. Ferro Lad, as he died so soon after joining. Um, still a lot left to choose from. Don't remember M-E Lad, in the 20th Century, that's 4. Sun Boy (?), who had someone impersonating him travel to the past in his first appearance, but I'm remembering nothing else; Finally, two pure guesses. Bouncing Boy and Lightning/Light Lass, just because I don't immediately remember any stories with them involving time travel.

    3. I thought that Krypto and Beppo were both from Superboy's time (50's), Streaky was from Supergirl's (early 60's), Comet was from 3-5 years after Streaky (mid-late 60's, the first Superpets story labeled him as a pet from Supergirl's future), and of course Proty was from the 30th Century.

    4. Darkseid; Brainiac/Pulsar Stargrave/Computer Tyrants of Colu (depending on time frame); Mordru; the immortal Ra's however you spell it in the DNA Legion; Scavenger from the reboot Future Shock crossover; The Time Trapper and Glorith (she put Valor in the buffer zone after all in the Glorithverse!); Vandal Savage has never popped up, has he? I guess the word "survived" is key to your question and would eliminate any villain zombie appearances when Mordru raised the dead. Oh, Professor Ivo, kinda, in the Annual involving the JLA descendants. though I don't remember him actually doing that much. I think that's all I've got.

    5. I think that John's right about Supergirl doing it first. (Did it involve Kryptonite in his brain?) Saturn Girl did the suggestion that kept Superboy out of the 30th Century when the Legion kicked him out of his own comic though.

    6., 7., & 8. Can't really add to the previous answers.

  4. {{1. Supergirl was just elected Legion leader (in a shady vote). What happened the last time a Kryptonian was elected leader?}}

    Superboy had to decline the leadership because he wasn’t a permanent resident of the 30th century. He served as the 2nd Deputy Leader, and later the Legion Constitution was altered so that no time traveling hero could serve in a leadership capacity.

    {{2. The "Lightning Saga" Legion recently came to the 21st century. Of course, that’s not the first time that Legionnaires visited the past. But by my count, only 7 of the "traditional" Legionnaires (no retcons, no villains, etc.) never visited the 20th century during the ADVENTURE era (where Timber Wolf and Chemical King were the last to join). Which ones?}}

    Star Boy, Colossal Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, Bouncing Boy, Ferro Lad, Element Lad, Dream Girl. Just a guess.

    {{3. Not everyone traveled back in time – some went forward. From what time periods did all members of the Legion of Super-Pets travel from?}}

    Streaky, Beppo, & Krypto – 20th Century
    Super-Horse – classical Greece
    Proty & Proty II – 30th Century

    NOTE: Reports that Timber Wolf was ever a member of the Legion of Super-pets are apocryphal

    {{4. The Legion has fought a number of villains with 20th century roots, but which villain(s) survived from the 20th/21st century to the 30th/31st to fight the Legion, rather than traveled through time? }}

    Mordru. Ra's Al Ghul. Pulsar Stargrave was Brainiac (the original).

    {{5. Who implanted a post-hypnotic suggestion in Superboy's mind so that when he went back to the 20th century, he'd forget anything he'd learned about his future while he was in the 30th century? }}

    Supergirl herself – the Pre-Crisis Kara Zor-el, of course.

    {{6. Back in the days when new applicants had to perform a task, what was Ultra Boy tasked to do? There are two answers to this:}}

    Pre-Crisis: He had to go back to the 20th Century with his Mentor, Marla (who was a MAN, despite the girly name – and wore a suit just like Ultra-Boy’s, sort of) and discover Superboy’s secret identity.

    Glorithverse: I believe he had to dance like a monkey. I may be wrong.

    {{7. Their encounter with Lori Morning was not the first time the Legion had had to deal with the H-Dial. When was the first?}}

    In the H-phone booth.

    {{8. In Adventure 247, when the Legion traveled back in time to recruit/tease Superboy, how did the powers of each of the three Legionnaires manifest themselves?}}

    Saturn Girl read minds; Lightning Boy (sic) had a “Lightning Clap” (they have Lightning Penicillin for that); and Cosmic Boy had “Magnetic Eyes” – sort of like Elvis, I guess.

  5. Good job with the questions this time around. You guys are too smart! I'll see what I can do next time. I thought for sure nobody would remember that Supergirl gave Superboy the post-hypnotic suggestion originally, not Saturn Girl (who most everyone thinks did it).

    Off to Vegas tomorrow with the rest of the Legion of Super-Gamblers, I'll get the official answers next week.

    Comments and hints:

    2. John K: yes, I was looking at all Legionnaires in any book who went to the 20th century (which includes Superboy's and Supergirl/Superman's times).

    4. No, I wasn't considering the Infinite Man, even though he did live through all of time (in a fashion). I was thinking of those that we saw in the 20th century (in the Legion's or any other book) that lived 1000 years. (Surprisingly, we never saw Vandal Savage though.)

    John M: I didn't consider the Time Trapper and Glorith, since they didn't originate in the 20th century (or before) and live to the 30th like the others listed.

  6. Hullo, Michael,

    Okay, so if one is including all the Legionnaires who have travelled to the 20th Century during the Adventure book appearances, we can go as follows.

    The seven Legionnaires from the Adventure period who never travelled back to the 20th Century are Star Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, Dream Girl, Ferro Lad, Karate Kid, Chemical King, and Timber Wolf. Technically Star Boy has been back to the 20th Century, back in Adventure #282, when he met Lana Lang and pretended to be her boyfriend to make Superboy jealous.

  7. I'm pretty sure that TimberWolf (after Furball... before rebooting) travelled back to the 20th century. Wasn't his mini-series set in that time period?

  8. Hullo, Murrfox,

    Yes, but that was well after the run in Adventure Comics, which is what Michael was after here.

  9. Hi John,

    You're right. I misread the question, and was thinking that it was asking which Adventure era characters had not travelled in time, when instead it's asking the question about the characters during the Adventure era.
