The Retconned Timelines of the Tornado Twins

Getting ready to do an episode (LOSP 849) covering Impulse #24-25. This one has Bart's mother Meloni coming back in time (for her first appearance) from the 30th century because she wants to take him back home for good. He learns his history and origin but ends up leaving his mom there and going back to the 20th century. This led me down the rabbit hole trying to figure out the history (or "histories", as it turns out!) of the Tornado Twins, because there appear to be three distinct versions depending on which continuity it is and what's been retconned in or out. I'm pretty sure this is accurate now, but help me out if I missed something important.

Let's explore!

PRE-ZERO HOUR

Originally, the Tornado Twins Don & Dawn Allen were introduced as descendants of Barry Allen, aka The Flash from the 20th century. This was later retconned into them being his children, because in the Silver Age when they first appeared, Barry was still alive. Here's the timeline in the original continuity up through Zero Hour (includes the 5YL timeline), some of which came from Flash Secret Files & Origins #1.

• 2927: Iris Russell born to Eric and Fran Russell. Fearing a nuclear war on Earth, her parents send her back in time to the mid-20th century, where she is adopted and raised by Ira and Nadine West, who had just lost a daughter in childbirth, as Iris West. She later marries Barry Allen (Flash #203, 350; Flash Secret Files & Origins #1).
• 2957: Barry and Iris Allen arrive in the 30th century of Earth-1 after his trial to try to restart their lives together. Tragically, he disappears only a month later, and dies before finding out Iris is pregnant with twins (Life Story of the Flash).
• 2958: Don & Dawn born on Earth-1
• 2979: the Legion meets the Tornado Twins. (ADV #373)
• 2981: the twins attend the wedding of Chuck Taine and Luornu Durgo on Mars (Superboy v1 #200)
• 2986: the twins are targeted by Professor Ivo in a plot of revenge against descendants of the Justice League (LSH v3 Annual #1)
• 2993: Bart Allen born to Don Allen and Carmen Johnson.
• 2995: Iris Allen wrote a series of articles exposing the Dominators' covert domination of Earth and campaign to wipe out former members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. In revenge, and to prevent others from doing the same, the Dominators fabricated evidence that implicated the twins in the explosion of the Quebec fusion powersphere and had them executed for the crime by the corrupt Earthgov working with the Dominators (LSH v4 #17). Not long after, Iris Allen kidnaps her young grandson Bart, who is rapidly accelerating and aging, and takes him back to the 20th century shortly before Zero Hour in hopes Wally West could help teach and cure him, where Bart becomes Impulse (Flash v2 #91).

Remember, Bart actually first appeared BEFORE Zero Hour.

REBOOT TIMELINE, PRE-INFINITE CRISIS

In the Reboot Legion timeline which came out of Zero Hour, it was revealed that Bart had a cousin Jenni Ognats, who was the daughter of Dawn Allen and Jeven Ognats. Jenni joined the (Reboot) Legion as XS. But she had to be retconned in, so Dawn was now married and had a child. Carmen Johnson was retconned into being Meloni Thawne, a descendant of Eobard Thawne. Further, they wanted to keep the aspect of the Dominators killing the twins, so that got retconned into something different too. With the Silver Age Legion retconned away, these twins never met the Legion, and the Reboot Legion was later revealed (retroactively) to be on Earth-247. In some retellings, Jenni and/or Bart were said to have been aged to teenagers within days, but that doesn't fit the timeline unless she aged naturally (born 2978, joined the Legion in 2994). Most of this timeline is from Flash Secret Files & Origins #1.

Tragically, he disappears only a month later, and dies before finding out Iris is pregnant with twins (Life Story of the Flash; Flash Secret Files & Origins #1).
• 2958: Don & Dawn born on Earth-247 (Flash Secret Files & Origins #1)
• 2976 (approx.): Traveling through time, Wally West meets the teenage twins Don and Dawn (Flash v2 #114).
• 2978: Dawn Allen (age 20) marries Jeven Ognats and their daughter Jenni Ognats is born. (Flash Secret Files & Origins #1)
• 2980: Don Allen (age 22) marries Meloni Thawne and their son Bart Allen is born. Not long after, Dawn and Don were killed. Meloni was told that they were killed helping overthrow a Dominator invasion and they died nobly in the final battle against the alien forces (Impulse #24), but they were actually killed by Dominator agents with aid from Earthgov President Thawne (Meloni's father) and a corrupt Earthgov (LSH v4 Annual #6, Impulse #24), leaving an infant Bart and a two-year-old Jenni. 
• 2982: Bart Allen rapidly ages (at age 2, he appears 12 years old). The Dominators abduct him and Earthgov holds him for observation and experimentation, raising him in a virtual reality environment so that he ages as swiftly mentally as he does physically. Iris Allen kidnaps her grandson Bart, and takes him back to the 20th century in hopes Wally West could help teach and cure him, where Bart becomes Impulse (Flash v2 #91; Flash Secret Files & Origins #1). Bart stays in the 20th century for a couple years (his time) before his mother comes to retrieve him, but he only stays there briefly (Impulse #24-25).
• When Bart makes it back to the 30th century (Impulse #25), it's supposed to be shortly after Iris sent him back in time. But he is 2 years old (even though he looks 14), which makes Jenni 4 years old. However, Impulse #25 shows her as an infant, which would only have been the case before he was born.
• The timeline works out if Jenni is not aged to a teenager at this point.
• 2994: Jenni joins the Earth-247 Reboot Legion as XS as a representative from the planet Aarok.

POST-INFINITE CRISIS

Later, the original Legion was revealed to be still around (in the Lightning Saga storyline). That led to more retconning, with the twins originally being from Earth-0 and fleeing the Thawnes during the first Legions of 3 Worlds meeting, escaping to Earth-247. That preserved Jenni being able to join the Reboot Legion and the twins being killed by the Dominators; however, I had to move the entire timeline (from Flash Secret Files & Origins #1) up by 10 years starting when Barry arrived in the 30th century to accommodate both Jenni and Bart being aged up by the Dominators and still have Jenni be the correct age when she joined the Legion.

Tragically, he disappears only a month later, and dies before finding out Iris is pregnant with twins (Life Story of the Flash).
• 2968: Don & Dawn born
• 2986 (approx.): Traveling through time, Wally West meets the teenage twins Don and Dawn (Flash v2 #114).
• 2987 (approx.): Barry and Iris travel to the future to hang out with the twins (Flash v1 #800).
• 2988: Dawn Allen (age 20) marries Jeven Ognats and their daughter Jenni Ognats is born.
• 2990: Don Allen (age 22) marries Meloni Thawne and their son Bart Allen is born. Zoom tries to attack the Twins, but with the help of the first meeting of the Legions of 3 Worlds (L3W #3), the Allen families escape with Iris to find refuge on Earth-247. Shortly after migrating to Earth-247, Dawn and Don Allen were killed by Dominator agents under the guidance of Meloni's father Earthgov President Thawne, another sworn enemy of the Allens (Flash Secret Files #1). They left behind an infant Bart and a two-year-old Jenni. (LSHv 4 Annual #6.) The Dominators capture both youngsters, and as a result of experimentation, both are aged to teenagers within days (L3W #3).
• 2991: Jeven Ognats frees Jenni from the Dominators and takes her to his home planet of Aarok, where she learns to control her super-speed. (LSHv 4 Annual #6.)
• 2992: Bart Allen rapidly ages (at age 2, he appears 12 years old). The Dominators abduct him and Earthgov holds him for observation and experimentation, raising him in a virtual reality environment so that he ages as swiftly mentally as he does physically. • Page 1: Leland McCauley IV was last seen in issue 31. That may have been him with the Emerald Eye last issue, but we only saw a hand (so it could have been Starfinger III – we’ll find out soon enough).
• Page 2 panel 3: Cefn Gould (named after Interlac fans Cefn Ridout and Kevin Gould). In IOKIAS, Tom says this was supposed to be a male though she was drawn as a female. With the red hair, orange skin, and green eyes, Cefn looks like a Tamaranean (one of Starfire’s race).
• Page 4 panel 3: Danzig is the name of the city that is now Gdańsk, Poland. There’s no reference to Danzig elsewhere in Legion history, unless it’s named for someone like the heavy metal band.

• Fri 12/5/94 – Tenzil and Brek in court; Holo Scene news article on the trial (LSH v4 #11); Celeste is healed by a green glow; the former Legionnaires team up to capture Roxxas, who reveals Dominion control of Earthgov (LSH v4 #12).
• Wed 12/10/94 – All-points bulletin on Persuader, who meets Kent Shakespeare in on Quarantine trying to attack Char Burrane Jr. (LSH v4 #12). Persuader is defeated by Kent and SP Captain Gim Allon, who then takes Kent to Toonar (LSH v4 #13).
• Thu 12/11/94 – Kent leaves Toonar for Winath; Laurel fights Khunds in deep space; Tenzil and Brek on Gnogg. (LSH v4 #13).
• Sun 12/14/94 – The Legion is formally reinstated.
• Mon 12/16/94 – Tenzil, Brek, and Calorie Queen are taken to Tartarus by Prince Evillo; Tenzil banished to the Realm of Darkness (LSH v4 #14).
• Thu 12/25/94 – Garth, Cham, and Rokk remotely survey Talus (LSH v4 #14).
• Fri 12/26/94 – Tenzil and Sugyn return from the Realm of Darkness, only to hear that Tenzil has been declared dead and his Senate seat vacated (LSH v4 #14).
• Sat 12/27/94 – Loomis writes his report on Talus’ suitability for being the new HQ; Tenzil leaves Brek behind on Tartarus and heads for Winath (LSH v4 #14).

• Wed 4/22/95 – Lobo brings Aria to Darkseid, followed by Jo, Kent, Celeste, Brainy, and Furball. Lobo is revealed to be merely a probe and Darkseid vanishes him, and then turns Furball back into Brin. The Gemini Matrix activates and Aria turns into an adult Gemini and blasts Darkseid, per his secret wish, who then disappears. Back on Earth, BION discovers the adult Laurel Gand while looking for the SW6 version, and the SW6 Legionnaires reveal themselves to Devlin (LSH v4 #24). The SW6 Legionnaires and Devlin escape the tunnels and link up with Universo and the Earth Resistance (LSH v4 #25), and then quickly go to the Resistance HQ in New Mexico. The Subs and Universo’s Resistance team capture the Weisigner Chambers from the Dominators, while BION follows Laurel to Talus (LSH v4 #26).
• Thu 4/23/95 – Garth and Imra decide to hold the christening of their new twins next week, on Saturday May 2 (LSH v4 Ann 3 part 2).

• While visiting Proty II's home world, the Legion see that they have constructed a statue commemorating the "Unknown Legionnaire", and reminisce on the mission that led to the creation of this commemorative statue.
• When the criminal scientist Norm Eldor escaped from prison, Supergirl is sent out to secretly track him down. The Legion suddenly finds themselves being attacked by Protean doppelgangers under the employ of Elder. However, with the aid of a spray that would reveal Protean impostors, and the aid of the arrival of a lead clad hero, who is dubbed Unknown Boy to aid them, the Legion are able to defeat the criminal Proteans and capture Eldor.
• After the mission is complete, Superboy deduces that "Unknown Boy" is really a disguised Supergirl. With her memory restored Supergirl informs the others that she was exposed to Red Kryptonite which caused her to have amnesia, and gave her the ability to use her x-ray vision through lead. Still remembering her mission and determined to keep her identity secret, Supergirl created the "Unknown Boy" armor to complete her mission.
• Kid Quantum is said to be the 9th Legionnaire to join (after the founders, Triplicate Girl, Phantom Girl, Cham, Colossal Boy, and Invisible Kid; joined prior to Brainiac 5 and Laurel Gand).
• Timeline: assuming issue 33 took place on May 6, it took Cham a day to reach Yal, so that's May 7. That means the Dominators getting the information on the Soul of Antares is the same day, as is when Cham finds Brande. The next day, May 8, Orion gets to Yal and the Antarean ship is hijacked, and the SW6 Legion finds Crystal Kid, Catspaw, Computo, and Dragonmage.

Valor leaves Shady to go to Earth to check into what he found (LSH v4 #23).
• Wed 4/22/95 – Lobo brings Aria to Darkseid, followed by Jo, Kent, Celeste, Brainy, and Furball. Lobo is revealed to be merely a probe and Darkseid vanishes him, and then turns Furball back into Brin. The Gemini Matrix activates and Aria turns into an adult Gemini and blasts Darkseid, per his secret wish, who then disappears. Back on Earth, BION discovers the adult Laurel Gand while looking for the SW6 version, and the SW6 Legionnaires reveal themselves to Devlin (LSH v4 #24). The SW6 Legionnaires and Devlin escape the tunnels and link up with Universo and the Earth Resistance (LSH v4 #25), and then quickly go to the Resistance HQ in New Mexico. The Subs and Universo’s Resistance team capture the Weisigner Chambers from the Dominators, while BION follows Laurel to Talus (LSH v4 #26).
• Thu 4/23/95 – Garth and Imra decide to hold the christening of their new twins next week, on Saturday May 2 (LSH v4 Ann 3 part 2).
• Sat 4/25/95 - Legionnaires in Africa with the Resistance and the SW6 Batch become aware of each other; the Subs and Grin’s resistance team discover others in the Weisinger Chambers; Rokk, Kono, and Loomis manage to subdue BION on Talus (LSH v4 #27). Dirk Morgna’s pod is discovered (LSH v4 #28).

Notes:

• Page 1: Kono and Cham are back on Talus. The last time we saw them was in the Annual, which was Saturday May 2 on Winath for Dacey and Doritt’s christening. Figure they left on Sunday, so this is Monday May 4 at the earliest.
• Page 2 panel 2: Element Lad is talking, opening up after his encounter with Sean Erin last issue.
• Page 4 panel 1: “Zyzan” is not the creature’s name, it’s his homeworld. He’s one of a race of yellow-skinned, cold adverse, lizard-like humanoids, who tried to raid the Earth of its ores by first luring the Legion offworld, then disguising themselves as Legion members when the Subs showed up instead (ADV 311).
• Page 4 panel 3: We finally meet Boston Foxworth (no relation to Annie Foxmoor, who was found in the SW6 chambers), who you’ll recall was a Star Trek’s Harry Mudd type rogue that Tom Bierbaum mentioned. He last appeared in the text pages in issue 27.
• Page 5 panel 9: the Dominion homeworld of Elia is not responding. Pay attention, this will be important later.
• Page 6 panel 1: The gamma bomb will likely not make you turn green, instead it’s probably related to the gamma weapons used in World War VI in the 28th century that we recently saw Glorith and the Khunds use back in issue 16.
• Page 12: judging from the state of the UP and Dominion fleets, and the two Valors, I’d say that at most only a few days have passed. So maybe it’s May 6 or 7?
• Page 14: on the other hand, it looks like no time at all has passed since Circe and Bounty went into SP HQ. We saw Sussa Paka’s shadow on the wall back in issue 30, when it was April 30th. We missed their meeting off-panel. Sussa still has her stolen container of unobtainium.
• Page 17 panel 2: name tags Shirow and Otomo are references to Masamune Shirow and Katsuhiro Otomo, the creators of “Ghost in the Shell” and “Akira”, respectively.
• Page 24: Keith Giffen got to kill Karate Kid a second time (with young Reep and Projectra as collateral damage). But somehow the Sourcebook says this is May 15th, which is just impossible given that Pol was born on May 2nd, this is not 13 days later. 
• Among those that we should assume are dead are those who were listed as being in the Chambers back in issue 27: Holdur, Polecat, Absorbancy Boy, Caress, Flynt Brojj, Squire Burroughs, Karate Kid II, Black Mace, Quake Kid, Crystal Kid, Radiation Roy, Visi Lad, and Dirk Morgna (as we saw back on page 9). But given that this is a comic and we haven't seen all the bodies, are we SURE they're all really dead? 
• Some of them come back later, but I'm not going to tell you which ones.

• Whatever happened to RJ Brande? He hasn’t been seen in quite a while, since late 2985 or early 2986. 
• Back in LSH v3 #9 he was seen meeting with a couple of Proteans under mysterious circumstances, one of whom later turned out to be the former pet of Leland McCauley IV (it’s implied that Brande was trying to get info on McCauley from the Protean). McCauley tried to have Brande killed, but the Legion stopped him, though his estate was destroyed. 
• His parting words to the Legionnaires in LSH v3 #17 (Dec 1985): “McCauley ruined this nice little world, your founders are off being grown-ups, and to tell the verdammt truth, I’m bored as a starman planetside. There’s not a squishy thing except money to keep an old man here anymore – so I’m off to a new world, a new name, and a new face – and damn this old pudgy body too! Send my regards, tell my boy Reep I’ve gone, and by damn, I’m gonna find a world where I can have fun!” 
• His next (and most recent, to date) appearance was in Secret Origins 25 (April 1988), where he was in a starport waiting lounge (looking like Santa Claus), telling a group of kids the story of the founding of the Legion.

• Mon 4/13/95 – Dacey and Doritt Ranzz are born to ex-Legionnaires Garth and Imra Ardeen Ranzz. Rokk recalls the events of Venado Bay as the Dominators start executing Science Police Earth officers who are revolting against the Dominators. Mysa Nal is contacted by the spirit of Amethyst (LSH v4 #20). After being exposed to the null radiation from the detonation of Metropolis' powersphere on the 11th, Devlin is getting worse. (LSH v4 #25).
• Wed 4/15/95 – Furball meets Aria on Zuun, unaware that she’s being hunted by Darkseid; Atmos revealed to have been killed by Project Champion; the Dominators begin harsher punishment of insurrectionists on Earth (LSH v4 #21).
• Fri 4/17/95 – Jo, Celeste, and Kent on the way to Zuun to get Brainy and Furball; on Talus, Kono reads Nura’s unanswered messages to Mysa; on Altair, Valor finds troubling news from a Dark Circle computer (LSH v4 #22).
• Sat 4/18/95 – Disease and rebellion reported widespread on Earth; Dominators performing mass executions (LSH v4 #30).
• Exact date unknown: members of the Dark Circle recount the history of Valor.
• Mon 4/20/95 – Devlin is healing and appears to have powers just like Reflecto of Rimbor (LSH v4 #29).
• Tues 4/21/95 – Jo, Celeste, and Kent arrive at Zuun (LSH v4 #22).They are briefly detained but they escape to the surface and meet up with Brainy and Furball, but Lobo captures and leaves with Aria; during the escape, Celeste generates a burst of intense green energy. On Earth, Resistance leader Jacques has Laurel and Bounty meet up with Circe, who has turned against the Dominators and Earthgov. Valor leaves Shady to go to Earth to check into what he found (LSH v4 #23).
• Wed 4/22/95 – Lobo brings Aria to Darkseid, followed by Jo, Kent, Celeste, Brainy, and Furball. Lobo is revealed to be merely a probe and Darkseid vanishes him, and then turns Furball back into Brin. The Gemini Matrix activates and Aria turns into an adult Gemini and blasts Darkseid, per his secret wish, who then disappears. Back on Earth, BION discovers the adult Laurel Gand while looking for the SW6 version, and the SW6 Legionnaires reveal themselves to Devlin (LSH v4 #24). The SW6 Legionnaires and Devlin escape the tunnels and link up with Universo and the Earth Resistance (LSH v4 #25), and then quickly go to the Resistance HQ in New Mexico. The Subs and Universo’s Resistance team capture the Weisigner Chambers from the Dominators, while BION follows Laurel to Talus (LSH v4 #26).
• Thu 4/23/95 – Garth and Imra decide to hold the christening of their new twins next week, on Saturday May 2 (LSH v4 Ann 3 part 2).
• Sat 4/25/95 - Legionnaires in Africa with the Resistance and the SW6 Batch become aware of each other; the Subs and Grin’s resistance team discover others in the Weisinger Chambers; Rokk, Kono, and Loomis manage to subdue BION on Talus (LSH v4 #27). Dirk Morgna’s pod is discovered (LSH v4 #28).
• Sun 4/26/95 – On Talus, Brainiac 5 studies BION, and Valor suggests that the adult Legionnaires may be clones. Monica Sade is released from the Weisinger chambers, and then Dominator troops temporarily gain control of the Chambers. Circe and Bounty plan to take out Pinnacle Command, while the Dominators prepare mind-wiped agents to attack the Subs (LSH v4 #29).
• Thu 4/30/95 – Tensions on Earth reach the breaking point when President Tayla Wellington is assassinated by the Dominion during a live broadcast (LSH v4 #29, 30). Aria tries to take the dying Brin Londo back in time to prevent his father from administering the first Zuunium injection, but accidentally dumps them both in the 20th century (LSH v4 Ann 3 part 1). Legionnaires begin to arrive on Winath for a reunion to attend the christening of Dacey and Doritt Ranzz (LSH v4 Ann 3 part 2).
• Fri 5/1/95 - On Earth, the Subs battle mind-wiped Dominator agents; the Dominators and UP fleets meet up in orbit around Earth (LSH v4 #30). More Legionnaires arrive on Winath for the christening; the Naltor Dreamers defeat the Winath Jaybirds 6-1, clinching their first pennant since 2980 (LSH v4 Ann 3 part 2).
• Sat 5/2/95: Dacey and Doritt's christening; Pol Jath Krinn is born to Rokk Krinn and his wife Lydda; Ayla Ranzz learns that Garth is really Proty I, inhabiting her brother's re-animated body (LSH v4 Ann 3 part 2).On Earth, Jan helps Shvaughn Erin and sees his SW6 self, while in space the adult Valor meets his SW6 counterpart (LSH v4 #31).
• Wed 5/6/95: Cham begins a search for R.J. Brande. On Earth, Circe and Bounty capture Spider Girl. The Subs escape from the Weisinger chambers with the help of the SW6 Legion, but Grinn sets off a self-destruct mechanism that destroys all the chambers. The SW6 Chameleon Boy, Karate Kid, and Princess Projectra are killed fighting Dominion troops (Note: the Sourcebook says 5/15, but that's too much time since the christening) (LSH v4 #32).
