LSH v4 #26 annotations: The Terra Mosaic, part 2

Annotations for Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #26

Notes:
  • Page 1: The title for this arc, “The Terra Mosaic”. Actually started last issue, but this is the first time we see it, and we don’t know what it means yet. When will we know? Good question!
  • Page 2 panel 5: I wonder if “547 Trip Corridor” is an Interlac reference?
  • Page 3: the action picks up moments after the scene from issue 24 where BION attacks the adult Laurel, thinking that he’s got the SW6 Laurel. BION uses Ultra Boy’s flash vision.
  • Page 4: BION uses super-strength, likely from Valor and/or Laurel Gand and/or Ultra Boy.
  • Page 4 panel 7: is “J.J.” an Interlac reference? How about “Honest Al’s Omnicom Emporium”, or is that just Al Gordon?
  • Page 5 panel 8: More Al Gordon graffiti “AL G”
  • Page 6: The President of Earth, Tayla Wellington (although we haven’t been introduced yet). Recall that the Earthgov HQ used to be in Metropolis, now it's in London.
  • Page 7 panel 2: BION uses heat vision, probably from Valor or Laurel Gand
  • Page 8: BION uses Chameleon Boy’s and Element Lad’s powers
  • Page 9: since Laurel’s fight with BION is still going on, it is still the same day as we saw in issue 24, and as her fight was concurrent with the SW6 batch meeting Universo in Metropolis, it appears that, Universo and the Legionnaires have relocated to New Mexico from Metropolis rather quickly.
  • Page 10: Universo’s team includes Chlorophyll Kid, Ronn Karr, Color Kid, and Grinn.
  • Page 11: BION says he’s stacking the strength and invulnerability of Laurel, Valor, and Ultra Boy.
  • Page 13: Fire Lad is part of Universo’s team as well
  • Page 19: Furball is still back to being Brin Londo, where he was reverted to in issue 24
  • Page 24: Some of the Weisinger Chamber equipment dates back to the time of L.E.G.I.O.N.
  • Page 25-26: Recall that Talus is basically a junkyard of old ships and hardware. Going from the top to the middle and then clockwise around the loop at the right:
    • Thanagarian Scout - believe it or not, we didn't see a Thanagarian until SBOY 217.
    • Khundish Zeppelin - a 30th century cover band
    • Bgztlr freighter, with portal to the Bgztl Buffer Zone (formerly known as the Phantom Zone)
    • Dominator tanker from the Atu era (can't find any reference, maybe it's an Interlac thing?)
    • Llorn transport – The Proteans of Antares II were made into pets by a great humanoid scientific civilization called the Llorn that colonized the world. When a giant orange star passed too close, altering the planet’s climate cycle, the scientific humanoids left, using an Evolution Beam to alter the Proteans, giving them the ability to alter their shape and adapt to any environment (ADV 322).
    • Ancient Rimborian - we saw from Jo's journey in the past that Rimbor had an ancient culture that disappeared before being recolonized
    • Ancient Dominion battlewagon - "Brainy could animate Vavoona with this mother lode". Vavoona was once the location of Colossal Boy, as seen on the Legion’s Mission Monitor Board (ADV 342)
    • Something mystical, from pre-historical Dark Circle
    • Khundish starhive, Zaryan era (circa 2975, 20 years prior)
    • Citadel strafer - the Citadel was a fascist star empire that came to dominate twenty-one of the twenty-two known worlds in the Vega star system, originally seen in the Omega Men stories in the early 1980s.
    • Science Police transport
    • Sklarian clipper - from the Sklarian Raiders, of which Kono is one
    • Bomber from Mordru’s fleet - we only saw a flashback of it, but Mordru tried to invade Earth in 2976 (adjusted time, per the Sourcebook, shortly before Lightning Lad lost his arm to the Super Moby Dick of Space in ADV 322)
    • Imskian whaler - probably what the Imskians used when they went space dragon hunting for their scales (SLSH 232)
    • Burned out, circa 28th century wars - likely the World War VI time frame of Soljer (SBOY 210)
    • Bismollian paddy wagon
    • Wexr II luxury cruiser - Wexr II is a planet of space-bandits whose inhabitants used their powerful weapons to raid and colonize less technologically advanced worlds. Original home of the Superboy Revenge Squad (later the Superman Revenge Squad) (SBOY 94)
    • Sklarian circa male dynasty - must be pretty old since the Sklarians are a female-led race
    • Space ark, pre-Aral alphabet (no references to Aral, maybe an Interlac thing?)
    • Dominion/Dubrini era – height of organics (Dubrini is probably an Interlac thing)
    • Enslavers, pre-dates Dominion Circle era - ??? but pretty old
    • Aetian/Talokian merchant vessel - described in the Sourcebook as a "triangle of space between the Khundish Empire, the Dominion, and the United Planets". But the Talok system is not inside Aetia, or even particularly close.

Here's what we know of the timeline to date. I'm color coding them based on whether the date appeared in the 2995 Sourcebook (yellow), it's a confirmed date that was given in the comic (green), or an estimated date based on keeping track of events and days (blue). Bold text is something new added this issue.

    • Kent Shakespeare and Gim Allon are both ex-Legionnaires, but it’s unknown when or under what circumstances they left. (LSH v4 #12)

Legion sales data: March 2020 (LSH v8 #5)

Sales are still leveling off, with just a 5% drop from issue 4 to issue 5, just 1600 copies. We're starting to get into the region where retailers were able to see what the books were actually selling before ordering new issues, so I'd expect steadier sales in the next few months as retailers get a handle on how much to order. Still, it's DC's 18th highest selling book - consistently in the top 20 - 10 of which were Batman or Superman.

The Legion book came out the last week that books were available for sale before stores closed for the COVID-19 pandemic; it remains to be seen at this writing (April 30) when the next issue will come out, so it'll be a couple of months at least until the new sales data comes out (and then it'll have to reflect not just Diamond but the other two companies doing distribution for who knows how long).

    Sales data via Comichron.

    Legion of Super-Heroes (volume 8) #5 - May 2020
Issue 5 had two variants on 3/25/20.

    LSH volume 8 #5
    Standard cover
Art by Ryan Sook and Travis Moore
    LSH volume 8 #5
    Cardstock variant
    Art by Alex Garner

TL;DR version: LSH #5 sold 29,058 copies (down from 30,675 the previous month) and was the #59 book for the month and the #18 DC book.

    Context:
    • Combining both covers, LSH #5 was the #59 book for the month, with total sales of 29,058 (down from 30,675 the previous month). It was the #18 DC book (behind 10 Batman books, 2 Superman books, 2 JLAs, 3 Flash books, 1 Green Lantern, plus specials DCeased, Year of the Villain, and the new Strange Adventures). The #1 book of the month was Spider-Woman #1 with sales of 142,089 (no other book broke 100k sales), while the #1 DC book was Flash #750 with sales of 82,432.
    • The $3.99 regular cover was the #78 book for March 2020, with sales of 22,570 (down from 23,075 the previous month). It was the #89 DC book.
    • The $4.99 cardstock cover variant was the #101 DC book and the #241 overall book for March, with sales of 6,488 (down from 7,600 the previous month).
    • Still too early to say the point where sales will level off, where the book has found its base, but after the relatively small drop from #2 to #5 (about 18%) I'm going to guesstimate it'll level off around 27,000 or so.
    • Digital sales of issues are generally not known to the public, but anecdotally the digital market as a whole is about 10% of the traditional market. This does not necessarily apply to any particular comic from any particular company. Diamond does not report digital sales, and it's the Diamond data going to Comichron.
