Toyfair 2011 Update

The annual ToyFair in NYC was this past weekend, and among the highlights (for us, at least) were the release of some more of the Legion figures from the upcoming 12-pack. The new ones are Wildfire, Chameleon Boy, Timber Wolf, and Brainiac 5; in San Diego last year, we saw Superboy, Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, and Matter-Eater Lad. Unseen so far are Karate Kid, Ultra Boy, and Colossal Boy. At San Diego they said the pack was supposed to also include Proty II. In the bottom picture you can see the Legion flight ring replica (warning: does not enable the user to fly) that also comes with the set. The pack will retail for $180 from MattyCollector only.

We revealed four additional figures from the Legion of Super Heroes 12-pack! Fortifying the Legion are Timber Wolf, Wildfire, Brainiac 5, and Chameleon Boy. The rest of the figures will be revealed at conventions throughout the year.

First up: there's been a rumour going around that DC Direct is not going to be making action figures anymore, and that Mattel will now be handling all toys, while DC Direct does statues, busts, etc. Higher end stuff, really. It co-incides with Georg Brewer's leaving, after 9? years in charge of DC Direct.

Well, the Brainy figure is disappointing. Two reasons; if you look closely at the belt, it appears to have pouches rather than circuit boxes; it's a force shield belt, not a utility belt.

More significant is the hairstyle. I just can't picture Querl sticking enough product in his hair to get that kind of altitude in front.

it was drawn as circuits when it first appeared but later was switched to a utility belt while timberwolf was in the costume pictured so it is accurate. hope that makes you feel better about it.

Overall, these are looking cool—but the head/face sculpts are verging on camp—never mind all the over-the-top swooshy Brek-Girl hair styles.

Lightning Lad's pouty porn lips & leering too-dark eyebrows, Cosmic Boy's clamped-teeth Polident commercial smile, and Superboy's giant Dippity-Do spit curl and just plain goofy expression are particularly AWFUL.

And Timber Wolf is way too happy-looking. If anything, Brin should be the one with the open-mouthed sculpt the Horsemen have become fond of—something snarling and feral would be excellent.

And what the heck is Superboy's cape supposed to be attached to? I'm hoping that's just an issue with a wardrobe malfunction on the prototype as it seemed to be correctly attached to the costume on the Toy Fare cover. ;)

I hate to complain so much since we've waited SO long for these—and I really want them to manufacture the rest of the classic Legion—but I don't want my other figures laughing at them behind their little plastic backs! ;)

$180. Gulp. That's a bunch to drop at once.

Yeah, yeah, you are all correct in what you are saying, but I WANT THIS! I don't care if they are not perfect, I will have them. So, when are they coming out? I thought it was supposed to be this spring.

Must. Have. Wildfire.

They are now scheduled to debut on MattyCollector.com in August 2011.

August, huh? Well, there will still be enough late-summer thunderstorms around for my plan to work, if I remember to keep these posed by an open window....

They look huge. How big are they?

also still a little put of by the lack of female presence

Wndola, these are two-ups, meaning they're twice the size of the final product. The final figures will be the same size as any DC figures you see at your local store, about 6 inches.

I cannot believe how Giffenesque they managed to get Brainy to be. I need to find pals who will go in with me on the set so I can have Brainy and ME Lad.

I Only want Wildfire.

Brainy's always been at the product. How do you think he got his hair slicked back severely in his early years? It looks quite floppy here. I love the face sculpt. He's the best looking of the bunch
