Jim Lee's variant LSH covers
The DCU Source blog today released the first of Jim Lee's variant covers, to appear on LSH v6 #1:
Via the Fire Wire comes this Newarama video from last week's C2E2 in Chicago (jump to the 2:00 mark), in which he discusses the series of covers.
Paul Levitz's last decision as publisher, as Lee says, was for Jim Lee to do variant covers for the first six Legion issues. He says the Legionnaires were his favorite characters from when he was growing up. First is Saturn Girl from the 70s in her pink costume (his favorite era) - but in the video, note that they show her in her 60s red outfit in the background. Each cover will feature one Legionnaire from 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s but not in that order, along with spaceships and the HQ. You'll be able to put them together and show a whole chronology of what the Legion has been about.

I really wish Saturn Girl would go back to this costume and the long hair. This variant cover is incredible.

I'm not seeing a clubhouse in there. FWIW, Comicbookresources.com incorrectly cites Dave Cockrum as the designer of Imra's Bronze-Age look.

I don't normally like Jim Lee's work - at all, but this is a nice pin-up.
Nice to see a Mark X Legion Cruiser in the background, looking all Star Trekky as it should.
Although I wish she didn't look like she was posing for a leather-fetish website, I do appreciate that her breasts look like real breasts!
Oh, I hadn't noticed that detail; they do look real. But in any case, what do we know about 31st Century Breasts? :)
Well, if humans change as much in the next 1000 years as they did over the past 1000 years, I doubt there'd be a lot of change in breasts.
Then again, she is from Titan, and you know what they say about Titanian women......
And hey, no cameltoe. This is a quality pinup!
So what are going to be the iconic other 5 characters/costumes? I assume all current Legion members, not Earth-247 (reboot) and Earth-Prime (threeboot). So I predict:
* XS from the 90s
* Dream Girl from the 80s (with the silver one-piece, rowr)
* Cosmic Boy from the 50s, with the A-247 helmet and words on his costume
* Polar Boy from the 00's, with his ice arm
* Colossal Boy from the 60s, with the Wild West gloves
3 boys, 3 girls. iconic costumes.
50's - Cosmic Boy
60's - Lightning Lad
80's - Sensor Girl
90's - XS
00's - Dawnstar
Mm, yes. The robot arm should be in the mix.
Yes, the anatomy does look more realistic than seems to be the exaggerated norm these days, which fact I like, but I do still have a little qualm: Real cloth is never going to fall on the body like it does here (and in 99% of other depictions of the female torso in comics, I'd wager). It looks more like the body-painted nude models in the SI Swimsuit Edition.
Given that, this is nonetheless a beautiful rendition of Saturn Girl.
Ye GODS, that's the only properly dramatic look for her, with her non-visible talent, and it always will be. Thenk kew, K. Haven Metzger (fan designer), and Cockrum, Grell, and Sherman (amplifiers thereon), for keeping it in our minds' eyes, to return again with Lee.
Magenta, yes, as well. (NOT that over-warm red.) Long hair. (NOT butch. She was never butch.)
Who says it's "cloth," though? At least once, they posited something called "polymicronics," which — even now, perhaps, with budding nanotech — could well be engineered to closely hug those contours.
(Mmmm. Hug. Contours. ... Please, Grey, grip yourself. I mean, erhm, oh, by damn, you know what I mean. Maybe part of me is still an adolescent {sigh})
Cloth or not, I mean, even if it's cloth; if someone from the year 1010; heck, the year 1900 saw some of the clothes designers make these days, they'd say "nothing can fall on the body like that". It's the future, lads and lasses, the future.
