Adventure Comics news from Bristol

News from the Bristol Comics Expo in the UK this weekend:

From CBR:

The return of “Adventure Comics” to the DCU looks like an exciting prospect, with Vice President of Sales Bob Wayne explaining that each issue will have a variant cover numbers -- as if the original series had never ceased publication, so readers could choose to start with number #1 or continue with #504. The man who never sleeps, Geoff Johns, is on board with artist Francis Manapul on art duties in a book which will feature Connor Kent as Superboy in the main feature, with the Legion of Super-Heroes as the back-up. The Legion stories will act to reintroduce the futuristic super-team following the events of “Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds” (which DiDio promised would finish sometime!), focussing on individual key characters (starting with Starman) and then the team as a whole. If successful, there exists the possibility that the Legion will be spun-off into their own main series again at some point in the future.

"Variant cover numbers" -- oh, sure, make all our lives miserable (at least, those of us who are compulsive catalogers...and isn't everyone?)

I think what that means is that it'll be something like how Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four did it, it'll have a "1" and a "503" on the cover.

Check out this issue of FF, which was #70 (1998 series) with "whole number" #499, for example. I don't think that means variant covers with different numbers.

Its the language in that which makes me angry. A 'possibility.' Not an intention merely a bribe for legion fans to by adventure and be satisfied otherwise a solo won't be justified.Legion had its solo before Connor entered the neurones of his creators and long after his series died. Its cancellation was unjustified if we look at sales when characters like Blue Beetle and Manhunter were selling in single digit thousands. Part of me wants to not give them my money but part of me thinks that if it doesn't sell Legion will be locked away for no good reason other than editorial meddling. Funnily enough my other favourite in DC is Supergirl, she got me interested in Legion so I should be used DC locking things away and pretending they don't exist.

What I would like to know is how will DC determine "successful"? Surely not by sales alone because there would be no way to know who was buying the series for Connor and who was buying it for the Legion. I'm also going to guess that at the end of Lo3W there will be "one" Legion that crosses three worlds (because certainly if three Brainys can map the multiverse on Starman's costume, the 31st Century has the techonolgy to traverse the multiverse).

If I'm understanding the just posted solicits correctly, they are offering it as a true variant - "Retailers please note: This issue will ship with two covers. For every 10 copies of the Standard Edition ..., retailers may order one copy of the Variant Edition (... renamed ADVENTURE COMICS #504)."

To be more specific, the standard cover will say #1 and it's the full-size picture of Superboy with Luthor, the variant cover is the one that looks like Adventure #300 and it'll say #504. Inside, though, the indicia should say #1.
